Well, just to be clear, people retire at many different ages, many different days, and for a host of different reasons.
Still, there are three most common days that I've found people choose when they "pick their last day."
- Their birthday … "I'm going to work to age 66."
- Their work anniversary dates … "I'm working until I've been at the company 20 years."
- December 31/January 1 … "I'll work until the end of the year" (or for an extra day for an additional year benefit of some sort).
How will you decide your retirement day?
As described in The Extreme Retirement Planning Workbook, be sure to plan the financial and the nonfinancial side of retirement well in advance of the actual "last day." Good luck!
